Winery Suggestions For Italy
Exploring wineries in Toscana, Umbria and Puglia and one amazing olive oil estate

My cousin Nicola Ferri at our family’s Cantine Ferri winery located in Valenzano, Bari
I get asked often for recommendations regarding wineries in Italy. Truth is that I don’t visit a lot of wineries but I do drink a lot of wine while in Italy. So here is a list that I have put together of wineries that I have discovered. All of these recommendations come from places I have visited or are recommendations from people that I know here in Italy.
Most of the websites can be viewed in english but if not and you have trouble making reservations let me know and I can help.
Cantina Dionigi in Bevagna, Perugia
Google maps: Cantina Dionigi
Website: Cantina Dionigi
My good friend Letizia Mattiacci who is a cookbook author and runs the amazing cooking school in Rome “Madonna del Piatto” recommends Dionigi. I have not been but I know the area well. If you do go here you will take a road that passes by an incredible bread shop called Granarium. I was there and it was amazing. They make the bread on site and will show you around if you ask.
Dionigi could be easily reached if you were staying anywhere in Umbria (Perugia, Assisi, etc.) and a less than 2 hour drive from Siena.
Cantina Scacciadiavoli in Montefalco, Perugia
Google maps: Azienda Agraria Scacciadiavoli of Pambuffetti
Website: Cantina Scacciadiavoli
Another recommendation from Letizia. Again easily reached from Perugia, Assisi, etc. Beautiful winery and highly recommended.
Cantina Antonelli San Marco in Montefalco, Perugia, a few miles from the above Scacciadiavoli
Google maps: Antonelli San Marco
Website: Antonelli San Marco
My friend Mountain Butorac who runs “The Catholic Traveler” tour company out of Rome goes here all the time. Beautiful location, great people, great food to enjoy while you taste their wine. Again another gem in Umbria and very near Assisi/Perugia.
Castello Banfi Winery in Siena, not very far from the city of Siena
Website: Hospitality: Castello Banfi, Hotel Il Borgo, Tours & Tastings
Marcello who lives upstairs at our house where we stay in Ladispoli highly recommends this winery. And I trust his judgement. High end wine, very near the city of Siena. An incredible location. Five stars on TripAdvisor.
Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Bargino, not very far from Firenze or Siena
Google maps: Antinori nel Chianti Classico
Website: Antinori nel Chianti Classico
My good friend Marco Porro is a renowned chef in Rome and really knows his wine. He recommends going to Antinori. Il Bruciato is a Super Tuscan wine that is also made by the Antinori family. Check it out when you get a chance.
Cantina La Fonte Azienda Agricola, near Assisi in Perugia
Google maps: Cantina LA FONTE AZIENDA AGRICOLA
Website: La Fonte Azienda Agricola
One of the few wineries that will do tastings at night. Again a recommendation from my friend Marco Porro.
Cantina La Braccesca (same Antinori family as above) in Montepulciano, near Assisi, Siena and Cortona (Cortona is where Villa Bramasole is located from “Under the Tuscan Sun”)
Google maps: Tenuta La Braccesca
Website: Visit La Braccesca | Marchesi Antinori
Another recommendation from Marco Porro. This estate produces high quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of two distinct terroirs: Montepulciano, home to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and Cortona, known for its Syrah based wines. It appears you need to email them for a reservation so let me know if you want more information and I will talk with them.
Tenute Lunelli in Umbria and Toscana (they have 3 locations)
Google Maps: Umbria: Tenute Castelbuono
Website: Tenute Lunelli
Lunelli is recommended by my good friend Franco Manni who does tours up in the Umbria region. If you travel to the Sigillo/Umbria areas send Franco a WhatsApp at +39 339 751 4369. He offers wonderful tours of that region.
Cantine Goretti in Perugia
Google Maps: Goretti Wines Agricultural Production (S.R.L.)
Website: Cantine Goretti
Cantine Goretti is a recommendation from my wonderful friend Frank who has a beautiful penthouse in Sigillo where we stay. Contact Franco Manni via WhatsApp at +39 339 751 4369 for information about staying at the penthouse. Cantine Goretti is a short drive from Sigillo.
Cantina di Filippo in Perugia
Google Maps: Cantina di Filippo
Website: Cantina di Filippo
Cantina di Filippo is a recommendation from my friends Barbara and Rudy who run a beautiful shop, Terra Umbra, in Assisi. Filippo has a wonderful selection of wines and also olive oils. They are located about 20 minutes from Assisi.
Cantine Briziarelli in Perugia
Google Maps: Cantine Briziarelli
Website: Cantine Briziarelli
An amazing location and another recommendation from my friends Barbara and Rudy at Terra Umbra. Located about 20 minutes from Foligno on an amazing hillside overlooking the vineyard. It is my understanding that you must call or send them a message from their website for information regarding their tour.
Cantina Chiorri in Perugia
Google maps: Cantina Chiorri
Website: Chiorri Cellar - In Perugia: wine production and experience in the vineyard
Again a recommended by Frank. Beautiful spot.
Fattoria Colsanto in Perugia
Google maps: Fattoria Colsanto
Website: Fattoria Colsanto
Another recommendation by Frank. Beautiful location with an amazing selection of wines.
Castello di Montegiove in Terni, not too far from Siena and the Umbria region
Google maps: Castello di Montegiove
Website: Castello di Montegiove
Recommended again by Frank. Panoramic views from the castle which sits on top of a beautiful hill. You can also book a stay at the castle.
Cantina Tili Vino Bio in Capodacqua, near Assisi
Google Maps: Cantina Tili Vini Bio
Website: Tili Vini
Quaint spot and great wine, family run winery. Just a few minutes from the town of Assisi.
Terra Umbra Antica in Assisi, an amazing wine and cheese store
Google Maps: Terra Umbra Antica
Website: Terra Umbra Antica
I first met Barbara and Rudy over 10 years ago. They have a beautiful store stocked with incredible wines from the region of Perugia, amazing cheeses and lots of different salsas including tartufo. They are located about a 10 minute drive from the town of Assisi and just a few doors away from the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. Stop in and sample some of their incredible cheeses including their caciocavallo. If you ever need BEAUTIFUL gift baskets filled with wine, dried pasta, cheese, salsa, etc., sent anywhere in Italy Barbara and Rudy will take good care of you.
Wine Link Italy Tours
Website: About us - Wine Link Italy
Barbara D’Agapati is a good friend. She has been doing tours in the Umbria/Toscana area for a decade. Great knowledge of all the folks and wineries in that area. Again she runs tours. For the other recommendations I have listed above you would book on your own but if you would like a guide it would be fun to spend the day with Barbara. You start early and she takes you to multiple places as well as dinner, etc. True story…one night we were with Barbara in Umbria at a ristorante and she ordered some pasta for my wife and I. When it arrived I knew what it was but my wife did not. She started eating it and loved it until she realized the small little pieces of meat in the sauce were snails! That was the end of that…good times!!!🐌
Cantine Ferri in Valenzano, southern Italy (east coast), our family winery which is a few miles from my wife’s hometown
Website: Cantine Ferri
When you travel to southern Italy I would love to have you go to Cantine Ferri. We have a beautiful new tasting room with a terrific selection of wines. Primitivo is our speciality and our “Ad Mira” is wonderful. Let me know and I would be happy to make the arrangements for you.
Frantoio Decimi Olive Oil, located in Bettona, very near Assisi
Google Maps: Frantoio Decimi
Websiote: Decimi Olive Oil
We visited the family Decimi in 2015 and had a great tour of their facility. We tasted some fabulous olive oils and observed the process for producing olive oil from start to finish. Schedule a visit and taste their incredible product.
If you are in Italy during the first week of April I would suggest you go to VinItaly in Verona. EVERY winery that is anybody goes there to show their wines. It is amazing. While Vinitaly is primarily a trade show for wine professionals, there are opportunities for the public to experience the event through "Vinitaly and the City," an off-show event with tastings and events in the historic center of Verona.
As you travel Italy you will realize that the little out of the way places where you stop will be the most enchanting and memorable. Everywhere you drive there are treasures. Take the time to visit the locals and the little towns if you can. If you do, you will realize that Italians have truly discovered the way to live and enjoy life.
